Hiring Fairs

In class, we read an excerpt from The Hiring Fair  by Elizabeth O'Hara.
Thankfully this doesn't happen now, but maybe some older relatives would have some information about these fairs.
Ask at home and post any news here.

I found out some info about hiring fairs

Hiring fairs were associated with big city's
Magie Faulkner had a brother who ended up with some guards .he was hired at only 7and a half years old.
her mother went out over the mountains on Easter Sunday with a clean shirt and an Easter egg to him.

It's hard to understand why a mother would bring two of her children to the fair to be hired to work for three to six months for strangers they don't know.It must be understood that in those days there were no government benefits ,no employment benefits,no sickness benefits and no family benefits, people simply worked or starved. It was not unusual for people to die from diseases.People were living in stone houses or turf houses.
